Platonic solids: five perfect forms, many later meanings

The geometry is precise: five convex regular polyhedra exist. The symbolic correspondences come from philosophy and later traditions.

The five solids

Tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron are the five convex polyhedra whose faces are congruent regular polygons with the same number meeting at each vertex.

Plato’s associations

In Plato’s Timaeus, four solids are linked with classical elements and the dodecahedron with the ordering of the cosmos. Later writers expanded these correspondences in many directions.

Modern sacred geometry

Contemporary systems may associate solids with energy centers, meditation or metaphysical qualities. Those uses belong to spiritual practice; they should not be presented as consequences of Euclidean geometry.
