Compact symbols helped represent substances, metals, planets and operations in manuscripts. Terminology and notation varied across time and region.

Historical alchemy involved real laboratory work. Some texts also used religious, cosmological or allegorical language. Later occult and psychological interpretations often foreground inner transformation.
Study tip
When a modern source says an alchemical image “really means” one thing, check the original text, date and context. A symbol can acquire new meanings without those meanings being historically primary.
